I have had one of these cases (10" variety) for going on six or seven years now. I received two more today, because my knife collection now includes more knives that I feel deserve to be kept in cases. I am a professional cook, so my original case got a lot of work, and it looks pretty much the same as the new ones that just arrived. The hinge has not worn out, and I have not lost any of the pads.

These are pretty much indispensable for anyone doing any sort of cooking that isn't in a kitchen with a knife block or mag strip. Don't put your knives into a knife roll naked, use these first! I'd also add that I find these much better than the sleeve-type edge protectors, which require you to put your knife into a hard plastic sandwhich blade first. It's easy to mess up your edge, they also only protect one side of the blade, and they come off easily.

I bought this solely for transporting my chef's knife to other places from home. Because I use a block for my knives, I really didn't need this for knives in the house. It's excellent. It fits my 10" knife perfectly, and I'm sure it will never pop open. The price is cheap considering how expensive a good knife is. I highly recommend it.

I finally caved in a bought a knife protector for my 8-Inch Chef's Knife. I wish I had bought it sooner! The knife is kept securely in the case which snaps closed. It is dishwasher safe, which is great. I had originally thought of getting a magnetic knife rack but I live in a rented property so cannot drill holes in the walls so this is a good alternative.

I purchased this blade saver for my new R.H. Forschner by Victorinox 8-Inch Chef's Knife. In a nutshell, this saver fits my knife like a glove and is extremely secure.

1. Clamshell-design allows you to open up the saver and gently place the knife in the unit. (Unlike other designs where you slide in the blade towards your palm :-/ ).
2. Small rubber 'bumpers' (for lack of a better word) press the blade from either side to safely secure the blade in the saver. This prevents the blade from moving or rubbing up against anything.
3. Secure locking mechanism. Two plastic latches securely lock the blade when you close the saver.
4. Blade is covered at the base of the blade by the saver (opposite end of the blade tip). This essentially prevents a child or whomever from picking up the knife and pulling on the handle to remove the blade without opening.

All in all, the best blade saver you can buy.

Fits all my 8" knives perfectly. Looks a little to large for my 6.5" Santoku Pure Komachi but it still fits and is quite secure when locked properly.
